Section A:  American Rose Society National Artistic Design Class


Class 1:
"Magnolia Plantations"

The Ralph S. Moore ARS National Challenge Trophy


This ARS national challenge artistic design trophy will be awarded to the highest-scoring line-mass arrangement in this class using only miniature roses with fresh plant material.  The requirements are that the roses must be outdoor grown, and that the arrangement score 92 points or higher.  (The official score card will be used in judging.)  “AG” must be written on the entry tag if the roses were arranger grown.  American Rose Society members only are eligible to enter this class.  Staged in niche 10”H x 8”W x 6”D.  No accessories permitted. 

 

Section B:  Special Artistic Design Class


Class 2: "Rhapsody in Blue"

The Ben Williams Challenge Arrangement Trophy (using only Mini-Flora Roses) A modern free form design.

This trophy will be awarded to the highest scoring entry, scoring 92 points or higher, based on the ARS Scale of Points.  Entry must be composed of arranger-grown roses and marked "A-G" in the upper right hand corner of the entry tag.  This class is limited to ARS Members only  (Trophy sponsored by Mr. Ben Williams) staged in a niche 10”H x 8”W x 6”D.  No accessories permitted. 

 

 

Section C:  District Challenge Class

 

Class 3: "Church Steeples"

 

District Challenge Class

Restricted to ARS members only, residing in the Carolina District.  A parallel design using fresh and or dried plant material staged in a niche 10”H x 8”W x 6”D. Entry must be composed of arranger-grown roses and marked "A-G" in the upper right hand corner of the entry tag.   

 

 

Section D:     “Musical Moments Traditional arrangements eligible for the ARS Mini Royalty Award.  Arrangements using fresh grown roses, other fresh and/or dried plant material is permitted.  Arrangements using only arranger grown roses, must be marked with  "A-G" in the upper right hand corner of the entry tag, to be eligible for ARS Medal Certificates.   No accessories permitted. To be staged in a niche 10”H x 8”W x 6”D.

 

Class 4:                 "Lara's Theme’’ A mass arrangement using miniature and/or mini-flora roses.

                        Other fresh plant material is permitted.

 

Class 5:      "Some Enchanted Evening"

                       A line-mass arrangement using fresh and/or dried plant material with fresh

                       roses.  

 

Class 6         "The Hills Are Alive With The Sounds of Music"

                       A line arrangement using fresh and/or dried plant material with fresh roses. 

 

Section E:    "America, I Still Hear Your Song" - Modern and abstract arrangements eligible for ARS Mini Artists Award and ARS Mini Medal Certificates (if arranger grown and marked with  "A-G").

Arrangements using fresh grown roses, other fresh and/or dried plant material is permitted.  Staged on a pedestal 19”H x 9” square in front of off-white wall.  Designs not to exceed 10” H, no backdrops allowed, but may use under-lay.

 

Class 7:            "For Amber Waves of Grain "

                       A modern arrangement using two containers (staged on black pedestal). 

 

Class 8:            "For Purple Mountains Majesties"

                       An abstract design, must have 2 or more abstract qualities (staged on white pedestal). 

 

Class 9:            "From Sea to Shining Sea"

                       A modern arrangement with part of the design being underwater (staged on white pedestal). 

 

 

Section F:   "Charleston, Charleston, Charleston, South Carolina” Modern and abstract miniature arrangements eligible for ARS Mini-Artists Award and ARS Mini Medal Certificates (if arranger grown and marked with “AG”), and using fresh miniature or mini-flora roses and designer’s choice of other materials.

                      

Class 10:          "Doing the Charleston" (A type of ballroom dance that was popular in the 1920’s.)   An Avant Garde Design staged in

a niche 10” H x 8” W x 6”D.

                      

Class 11:          "The Shag" (To dance the shag - a dance consisting of hopping movements on one foot and then the other, followed by

quick descent each in turn.)  A modern free form, staged in a niche 10” H x 8” W x 6”D.

 

Class 12:        “ Attack on Fort Sumter"  (1861- The first act of the Civil War on the Charleston Water Front.) A transparency design

staged in a niche 10” H x 8” W x 6”D.

                      

Section G:   "Tea House of the August Moon" Arrangements in the Oriental manner, eligible for ARS Mini Oriental Award and

ARS Mini Medal Certificates (if arranger grown and marked with “AG”).   Arrangements are staged in a niche 10” H x 8” W x 6”D.

 

Class 13:          "Butterfly Lake"

An arrangement in a low, open container showing water and in the naturalistic style.

 

Class 14:          "The Ashley and Cooper Rivers"

                       An Oriental arrangement in an upright, tall container.

 

Class 15:          "The Citadel" (The military college in Charleston.)

                       An Oriental free-style arrangement.

 

 

Section H:   "Nature’s Bounty" Dried Rose Arrangements - Other dried plant material is permitted, but roses must be the dominate flower.  No plastic, paraffin dipped or artificial plant material is allowed.  The best first place winner chosen will be eligible for the ARS Mini-Keepsake Award.

 

Class 16:          "The Cooper River Bridge"

                       A traditional arrangement using dried miniature roses.  Not to exceed 8” H x 6” W x 4”D.

 

Class 17:           "Hampton Park"

                       A modern arrangement using dried miniature roses.  Not to exceed 8” H x 6” W x 4”D.

 

 

Section I:    "Impressions of Winter" Dried Exhibits - Other dried plant material including pods, nuts, cones may be used, but roses must be the dominant flower interest.  Suitable ribbons or bows may also be used.  Entries may be hung on white presentation boards, provided by the exhibitor, or placed on the table.  Entries are not to exceed 10” cubical space.  The best first place winner chosen will be eligible for the ARS Mini

Rosecraft Award.

                      

Class 18:          "Spanish Moss and Live Oaks"

                       A wreath or wall hanging featuring dried miniature roses.

 

Class 19:          "Civil War"

                       A plaque or picture frame featuring dried miniature roses.

 

 

Section J:    "Hospitality Fountain " Table Designs - Eligible for the ARS Mini-Court of Etiquette Award and ARS Medal Certificates if roses are arranger grown, and “A-G” is written on the entry tag.   Exhibitions segments, service for at least one, linens, glassware, and any other items needed to complete the display including a rose arrangement and other components as desired.  No flatware allowed.

 

                      

Class 20:          "The Market Place"

                       An informal exhibition table.

 

Class 21:          "Custom House "

                       A formal exhibition table.

 

 

Section K: “ Special Classes – Each class eligible for an ARS Award if scoring a First Place Ribbon.  Staged in a niche 10” H x 8” W x 6”D.

 

Class 22:          "Rainbow Row " (Novice Class) Designer’s choice of arrangement, but arranger must indicate whether the arrangement

is traditional, modern or oriental on the entry tag.  No accessories are permitted.  Open to any arranger who has never

won a first-place ribbon in an ARS show.

 

Class 23:       “Central Railroad”  (Junior Class) Designer’s choice of arrangement, but arranger must indicate whether the arrangement

is traditional, modern or oriental on the entry tag.  No accessories are permitted.  Open to any arranger who is seventeen

(17) years or younger.

 

 

 

Section L:    Judge’s Class - Open to all Judges for this show (horticculture or arrangements). Eligible for ARS Judges Certificate.  Reservations required.

 

Class 24:            "Spoleto Festival”, Designer's choice of type of design & material. Style of design must be written on entry tag.

Staged in a niche 10” H x 8” W x 6”D.


Rules for Arrangements

 

1.     WHO MAY EXHIBIT, ADVANCE REGISTRATION.  The arrangement competition is open to anyone attending the convention, with the exception of Classes 1, 2, 3, and 25.  Exhibitor must be an ARS member to be eligible for ARS Awards.  All design entries are by advance registration with, Hazel Hruby @ 109 Crouch Street Saluda, SC 29138.  Phone 1-864-445-7062 e-mail @ hazelhruby@aikenelectric.net

 

2.     LIMITATION ON ENTRIES.  No exhibitor may enter more than one design in each class. Each entry must be the work of the exhibitor.

 

3.     ROSES, ROSE NAMES AND CLASSIFICATION.  Outdoor grown roses of high quality should be used in all arrangements, but need not have been grown by the designer.  ROSES MUST BE NAMED ON ENTRY TAG IN ACCORDANCE WITH ARS RULES.  Arrangements without the correct rose names will be penalized.  Only roses classified as Miniatures or Mini-floras by ARS may be used in miniature arrangements.  All types of roses may be used in all other arrangements.

 

4.     TIME AND PLACE. Entries will be accepted between 6:00 am and 9:30 am.  No entry will be accepted after 9:30am.  All arrangements may be picked up after the show.

 

5.     FRESH ROSES.  Other plant material may be used in arrangements, but FRESH ROSES must be the dominant flowers in all arrangements.  Other fresh and/or dried flowers and foliage may be used unless otherwise stated in the schedule.  Line materials may include dried, treated and painted plant materials.  Bases, accessories and underlays are allowed in all arrangement classes.

 

6.     NOVICE CLASS.  The Novice class is open only to person's who have never won a Blue Ribbon in the Rose Arrangement Division of an ARS Rose Show.  Exhibitor must state type of design on front of entry tag.

 

7.     JUNIOR CLASS.  The Junior class is open only to person's who are seventeen (17) years of age or younger.  Exhibitor must state type of design on front of entry tag.

 

8.      PROHIBITED MATERIALS.  No artificial flowers, fruits, vegetables or plant material will be allowed.  Fresh plant material may not be painted or dyed.  No cut fruits or vegetables or live creatures are allowed.  No plant material on the Area or the State Conservation List is allowed.  The American Flag is not to be used as a decoration.

 

9.     STAGING OF CLASSES. Classes 1-6 will be staged in white niches 10" high, 8" wide, 6" deep.  Classes 7-9 will be staged on 19” high, 9” square pedestals.  Classes 10-15 will be staged in white niches 10” high, 8’ wide, 6” deep.  Classes 16-17 will be staged in white niches 8” high, 6” wide, 4” deep.    Classes 18 & 19 will be staged in an area 10” by 10”.  Classes 20-24 will be staged in white niches 10” high, 8” wide, 6” deep.  Backgrounds are permitted in niches and must be furnished by the exhibitor.

 

10.   ARS ROSETTES AND CERTIFICATES will be awarded for winning entries scoring at least 92 points, as follows:

Mini-Oriental selected from Classes 13-15

Mini-Keepsake selected from Classes 16-17

10.   Judging – Arrangement Judges and Horticulture Judges must be registered for this conference. Only Judges and Clerks will be allowed on the floor during judging, and the decisions of the Judges will be final.

 

Judging will be in accordance with the current “ARS Guidelines for Judging Rose  Arrangements.  The ARS arrangement scorecards will be used to evaluate all entries.
